Texting 101 for Real Estate

In this day and age, almost everyone out there has a cell phone and uses text messaging for one reason or another.  Is it appropriate for Real Estate Agents to text their clients?  Absolutely! Just keep it short and professional.  Don’t forget to get permission from your clients first.

No one likes to receive a cookie cutter message that everyone gets, but scripting your texts does have its advantages, especially when you are busy.  Zillow Premier Agent has a great little article with several scripts you can use.  Of course you can create your own as well.

Ever think of using those emoji’s?  Why not!  Just be tasteful and use your emoji to relay emotions related to the text.  If you are texting that the sellers just accepted their bid, send a big grin to your client along with that text.

There are a few things to remember when texting your clients.  Below is a list of Do’s and Don’ts to help you get started.

The Do’s

  • Be Professional – use complete words and keep it during business hours.
  • Send Pictures – Your clients will want to see any additional photos of your listings when you get them.
  • Answer them as soon as possible – When people text you, they want to reach you quickly so don’t leave them hanging.

The Don’ts

  • Don’t share detailed information – send an email or give your clients a phone call to go over things such as lender information, inspection results and so forth.
  • Don’t send bad news in a text message – give them a call or meet in person so your clients can see and hear your disappointment as well.
