Improving Your Leadership Skills

One of the most important things a good broker needs is leadership skills.  Some people are natural leaders and others have to work hard at it.  Your team looks to you for support, inspiration and guidance.  Our blog this week will help you fine tune some of the qualities you may already possess and show you some new ones to add to your skill set.

  1. Your Mission StatementEvery successful business has a mission statement. If you don’t already have one, consider creating your own and display it.  This lets your team know where you want to go and what you want to achieve.
  1. Motivation

Keep your team moving forward and in a positive direction.  Create a work environment your team will look forward to.  Offer training to your team so they can improve their skills and become more efficient.  Don’t micromanage your team.  Let them do their job and trust that they can do it well.

  1. CommunicationMake sure that you practice your listening skills. Put away your distracting devices when you are trying to listen to your team’s needs.  Try not to interrupt them when they speak and use empathy to place yourself in their shoes.
  2. Show Honesty and Integrity

Building trust in your team isn’t an overnight process.  Start by setting an example and trust your team.  Sit down with them and gather feedback about yourself as well as providing them with some of their own.  Eventually everyone will feel comfortable enough to open up during the team meetings and be able to problem solve as a team.

  1. Decision Making and Risk Taking

Taking chances doesn’t have to be scary.  Do your research, weigh the pros and cons and make your decision. Don’t be afraid to make a decision that some team members may not agree with.  If you have built a good team, they will understand and support you.

These are just a few of the many ways that you can improve your leadership skills.  There are many self-improvement books to read and classes around that you can attend to assist you with your leadership abilities and team building skills.  Don’t be afraid to check them out, you may be glad you did.
